The moment Aileen steps out of the lab, she spots James’s back. “President James! Please wait. Let’s talk this—”

“…You know, come to think of it, there was something I wanted to ask you as well.” James was striding away, but he suddenly stops under a streetlamp and turns around. Aileen was trotting to catch up, so she nearly runs into him. After stopping short, she backs up hastily.

“What are you?”

“Huh? I just explained—”

“Let me change the question—you saw my true form, didn’t you?”

Aileen falls silent.

James tries another question, sounding bored. “If you don’t want to die, answer me truthfully. Why did you keep quiet about that, and then try to cover for me?”

“……”

“Nothing to say, hmm? And you expect me to cooperate with you? Don’t make me laugh. What are you trying to get me to do, now that you can hold my darkest secret over me?”

From James’s sneer, she can guess at the sort of things he probably endured in the past. Evidently, even people who saved him have betrayed him in one way or another.

Aileen feels sorry for him. It’s understandable he’d be wary of humans. Still… “What a pain…,” she mutters.

“Huh?”

“All right, fine, I’ll explain. Come out, Ribbon.”

They’re under a streetlamp, which means her shadow is pooling at her feet. The young fenrir pokes out of that shadow, head first. With Almond as interpreter, she’d learned that this fenrir is a little girl who loves ribbons, and so she named her Ribbon.

Ribbon is in the middle of a growth spurt, but although she’s rapidly getting bigger, she’s still a child. She looks at Aileen and emits a soft whine. Aileen smiles at her. “This boy says he’ll play with you.”

“Yip?”

“Wha—? Whoa!”

At the sight of the demon that’s emerged by her feet, James freezes in place, and the delighted Ribbon lunges at him, knocking him down. Then she gambols around, energetically licking him. “Stop—stop, make this demon stop! Hey!” he shrieks.

“Listen to me, Ribbon. Remember his scent. You’d like to play tag with someone, wouldn’t you?”

“Yip.”

“Tag…? What in the world are you trying to do?!”

“If I’m right, President James, whoever controls the supply of demon snuff around here is trying to make you transform. I want to protect you.”

James, who’s been struggling under Ribbon’s paws, immediately goes still. Ribbon stops licking him. She whines and tilts her head.

“Protect? What for? Why would you need to do a thing like that?”

“Why? Because if you haven’t done anything bad, then isn’t it only natural I feel sorry for you?”

James’s eyes open very wide. Aileen calls Ribbon, then explains. “As you see, I can summon demons. I can’t tell you to believe me just because of that, but… Well, if nothing else, I don’t think you have to worry I might be in cahoots with the church that’s hunting you.”

“…If you can summon demons, I’d imagine not. Those priests are in the business of purging them.”

“Besides, I’m here for Ashtart. Do you know him, President?”

At the question, James seems to flinch back.
